Clinical Use in Chronic Bronchial Asthma
Pranlukast is primarily used for the long-term management of chronic bronchial asthma in both adults and children. It is important to note that this is a "maintenance" medication, meaning it is taken daily to prevent symptoms rather than to stop an attack that is already happening.
When used regularly, it helps to:
Decrease Airway Sensitivity: The lungs become less likely to react strongly to triggers like exercise or smoke.
Reduce Nighttime Symptoms: Many patients find they cough or wheeze less during the night, leading to better sleep.
Lower the Need for Rescue Medicine: Over time, patients often find they need to use their "reliever" inhalers less frequently because their baseline health is more stable. The medication is especially useful for patients with "aspirin-sensitive" asthma or those whose symptoms are worsened by physical activity.
